Pre-Blog Reads: The Mark of the Lion Trilogy

So let me tell you about this absolutely beautiful series. For those judge-a-book-by-its-cover people, here are the covers (most recent -there's like 3-4 different editions).

I have so many things I want to tell you about this series, so if I fangirl too much, I'm sorry. I will leave below numbered reasons why you MUST read this series:

1. This lady knows how to write. Before reading Ms. Rivers' work, I didn't know what truly good writing was. Once I met her novel, Redeeming Love, I learned what good writing was, and believe it or not this series is even better!

2. "Ugh, but this is Christian fiction!" I know, I know, I hear all of your grunts and moaning, but guys, this isn't just any ordinary Christian fiction. I know people who aren't Christians who have absolutely LOVED this series. Her character development and way of writing captures any audience!

3. "But I don't like Historical Fiction..." That's exactly what I thought until I read this series. I thought historical fiction was meh and not as exciting, but this blew my preconceived notions out of the water. Many would think it is harder to identify with historical fiction characters because of the setting, time period, fill-in-the-blank, but let me tell you that Rivers does a fantastic job at not only bringing it to life but also showing you a side of humanity that can be easily compared to present day situations.

4. This is the top of the top on my list of book-loves. I have read each of these 3-5 times since I was 16 years old (I'm now 24). If you're not a re-reader, these books may turn you into one.

5. "I don't like romance series, or books that mostly contain romance." Don't fear! This series is actually not steeped in romance like many other [Christian/Historical] fiction novels. It has fighting to the death in the gladiatorial games, danger, mystery, political intrigue, you name it. Yes, this series does have romance, but it's not just a romance novel. It's a piece of art that shows humanity at its rawest form.

6. I love this author so much that my copy looks torn up, doggy eared, and well-loved, and if you know me, I'm so OCD about keeping my books in pristine condition that this makes absolutely no sense. Plus, I was even lucky enough to meet her in person and get her to sign my book!

Do you really need another reason to go check these books out from the library (or better yet, buy your own copies -b/c believe me, you will want to own this series)?

*Take note that I tell everyone that they MUST read the first three chapters in one sitting (which is around 60 pages). A lot of names will be thrown at you, and it's a little slow going, but after about 4-5 chapters, you won't want to put it down! I'm just
forewarning you!
