Top Ten Books I've Read this Year

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

As always, Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely ladies at The Broke and the Bookish.

I feel like I've read some really great books this year, but then I've read some really "meh" books, and sadly, the "meh" books outweigh the great ones... so I only have 8 books that are worth mentioning. They are in order, #1 being the best read of the year.

1. The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas. Can we talk about this book for a second? I mean Sam... My poor Sam! And Celaena! Sooooo many emotions and tears in this book. Read my review here.

2. The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin. What the hell? I mean that was such a major cliffhanger that I don't think any other book could compare! I've been needing Retribution of Mara Dyer since before I was born! Read my review here.

3. Compulsion by Martina Boone. This book tickled my fancy like few rarely do. It's sweet and light, yet also engrossingly inspiring. This is definitely a debut you should pick up. Read my review here.

4. The Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas. This was a great high fantasy read that I ended up really enjoying! Read my review here.

5. Defy by Sara B. Larson. Unlike many bloggers, I actually really liked this book! Read my review here.

6. Divergent by Veronica Roth. I read this book at the most perfect time in my life. I love Tris with every ounce of my being. This should have probably been a little higher on the list than it is. Read Jamie's review here.

7. Shadow Kissed by Richelle Mead. Back in February I binge read this entire series. Within 2.5 weeks I read all 6 books, and fell in love with the world she created. This was my favorite installment. Read my review here.

8. Sea of Shadows by Kelley Armstrong. This was one of the most interesting fantasy reads I've read period. It was a beautiful book, and I can't wait to read the next book when it comes out. Read my review here

What are your top reads of the year so far?

  1. I haven't read any of these! The Throne of Glass series seems to be really popular. Might have to check that out some day. But the stupid TBR pile is just too big already!

  2. Ugh, I'm like La Coccinelle -- too many books to read right now to really get into others. :( But I'm gonna tackle that reading pile like a man and defeat it!

    1. I've only read Throne of Glass but I really liked it and can't wait to start the sequel, which everyone has been just raving about. I've also been seeing The Assassin's Blade on a couple of other TTTs so it's good to know that even the novellas are nice. :D I don't usually read novellas, but since this includes all of them, they should read just like an actual story, right?

    2. Gosh, I really don't know if I should continue with this series. I read The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer AGES ago and never really got to getting the second book. I'm not even sure if I'm interested in finishing the series anymore even though I liked the first one. :/

    6. Yay! So glad you enjoyed Divergent! I agree, it's a fantastic book but I wish I could say the same for Insurgent. That one was nice, but not as great as the first. Tris is definitely one of my favorite characters of all time, and FOURRRRR. <3 So much love for him!

    8. So far all the reviews I've seen for Sea of Shadows have been pretty mixed. I'm about to start it soon, I think, so I really hope I enjoy it as much as you did!

    1. 1. I though Crown of Midnight (the second book) was much better than Throne of Glass, so be prepared for all the feels and kickass scenes! I would also recommend that after finishing CoM that you then read The Assassin's Blade. Technically you could read it whenever, but the novellas flesh out SO much that you knew but didn't know the depth of. SO GOOD!! You should definitely NOT forego this set of novellas. They are worth reading.

      2. I loved the first book (though I remember it being slightly confusing). The Evolution was out of this world. I loved every moment of it. I would highly recommend it and it left you on your knees begging for the next book.

      6. I have some different opinions regarding the Divergent series. Divergent was perfect. I loved it, and it was one of those books that I read at the most perfect time in my life. I fell in love with Tris' character. I enjoyed Insurgent. I wasn't expecting another Divergent, but I was pleased with it. I have yet to read Allegiant though, so don't spoil it lol! I'm still wanting to read it and I'm interested to see how she's going to wrap it all up.

      8. I really enjoyed Sea of Shadows. I read a lot of high YA fantasy and adult fantasy, so I was used to the slowness of this novel. It's creepy and awesome, but I will be the first one to admit that it has some slow parts, or seemingly repetitive parts just because it is an adventure and the setting is always different. I still really loved it, and I can't wait til the next book comes out! :)

Thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts with me!

  3. I'm very excited to read Compulsion. I'm glad to hear you thought so highly of it! I also really enjoyed The Assassin's Blade. I haven't even read the series yet, but I'm planning to tackle those three books over the next couple of months.

    1. Compulsion was wonderful, but I'm a sucker for anything Southern Gothic. And oh The Assassin's Blade! My emotions are just so strong concerning this series! It's wonderful! I hope you read and enjoy the series as much as I have, and I'm going to admit, I'm a little jealous of your being able to read the series for the first time. It's so wonderful and magical!
