Top Ten Books People Have Been Begging Me to Read

Tuesday, August 19, 2014

As always, Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely ladies at The Broke and the Bookish. Today we are talking about books that I'm not sure I want to read.

1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Addison has been calling me all sorts of crazy for not having read this book yet. And, I actually call myself crazy too.
2. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
I've been wanting read this book for forever, but just never got around to it.

3. If I Stay by Gayle Forman
As a person who doesn't like contemporary, when people recommend those titles, I don't generally listen; however, this looks amazing!
4. A Mad Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller
As a feminist, I'm told that I NEED to read this book.
5. Stray by Elissa Sussman
Again, I heard this one has major feminist themes, and from all the hype, I know I would love it!

6. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
I'm first and foremost a fantasy lover... so why have I not read this yet? All my IRL friends love this book and fangirl about it.
7. Side Effects May Vary by Julie Murphy
Addison says I need to read more contemporary *hangs my head in shame* and she's right. So she recommended this one to me.

8. The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski
I've heard nothing but good things about this book, and though it has stayed in my TBR pile, people are constantly recommending it to me.
9. These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
People tell me I need a space opera or two peppered throughout my reading list and this is the creme de la creme.
10. Red Rising by Pierce Brown.
I mean not only is Pierce Brown super hot (see this buzzfeed article and you will understand), Jamie swears up and down that this book is one of her top reads of the year, and I'm prone to believe her.

So what are some books that people have been begging you to read?

  1. I am going to have to pretty much agree with everyone who ever recommended The Winner's Curse, The Book Thief, A Mad Wicked Folly, and If I Stay. The others I can't comment on since I haven't read them myself.

  2. Shatter Me and These Broken Stars are on my list too.
I just finished reading the Grisha trilogy, and while Shadow and Bone was good, I thought the last book, Ruin and Rising, was the best in the series.

  4. I need to read The Book Thief, too! I don't think I've ever heard anything bad about it. Same thing goes for The Winner's Curse... but I don't actually have that one in my TBR pile, so it'll have to wait.

If I Stay is on so many people's lists today, and I just... No. It's not something I would ever recommend. I know it's popular and everyone else seems to love it, but I found it extremely boring (and a bit disturbing). Maybe if I had gone into it expecting a contemporary novel, my view might have been a bit different; I was expecting more of the supernatural angle when I read it years ago. Then again, I don't know if my opinions about the characterization or writing would've been much different...

  5. I think all of these could be on my list too! Although I did read The Book Thief and loved it. The Winner's Curse is one I need to just go buy because I really want to read it! I've decided I won't go see If I Stay until I read the book. It's sitting on my shelf right now.
