Let's talk book buying addictions

Friday, September 19, 2014
Hello, my name is Amanda, and I'm a book-buying addict.

If you guys knew me in real life, you would realize how many books I buy. I don't go to the library unless I am completely broke and can't get a book any other way.

I spend so much money on books. It's like an addiction. I spend more money on books than I do food or other things I really need. I think I may need to go to rehab for book buying.

Walking into a bookstore is a bad idea for me. Half Price is most definitely out of the question unless I have a specific book in mind or I walk in there with a specific amount of cash I can spend. Same goes for Barnes and Noble. But what really gets me is Amazon's "Buy Now with 1 Click" button. I just want to curse that button to the ninth circle of Hell for all eternity. I can't tell you how much money I've spent on ebooks due to that dang button. It's so tempting!

Which brings me to my major problem: self-control. I pride myself in always taking things in moderation, but book buying isn't one of those areas. I walk into a bookstore (or any store that carries books really), and I'm a goner. I always walk out with at least one book, maybe four, and sometimes six.

Addison saw this about a week ago, and she immediately thought of me. Guys, this is me to a freaking T.

Anyone know of a Book Buyer Anonymous group I could join?

What about you? Do you have a problem buying too many books? Or is there such a thing as too many books?

  1. I haven't gone to a bookstore in a while... partly because of this very problem. Leave it to me to find the YA bargain section and pick up a handful of popular hardcover titles for $6 or less.

I still buy a number of books, but now my problem is Amazon and their Kindle deals. I can stop myself from buying e-books that are $10 (that's just ridiculous, IMO)... but ones that are $2 or $3? I'm in trouble. That's how I ended up with books like Obsidian and The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer... and I just picked up Throne of Glass yesterday. Argh. The TBR pile will never let me get away!

    1. I totally feel your pain. But I will say Throne of Glass will blow you out of the water! Or at least that's what happened to me. And the series just keeps getting better and better!!!!

  2. I know how you feel. I *might have* bought twenty books (they were on sale) yesterday. I can only imagine what my Stacking the Shelves post will look like next week.

  3. I don't have this problem...but only because I don't have money! If I did?! OMG I WOULD BUY ALL THE BOOKS OF EVER. So honestly I'm kind of the same way but with the library. I borrow out WAY too many. >_< But then, hey, they'd be lonely on the shelves otherwise. And buying books...well you could have worse addictions, right?! And you're really supporting authors so, you're doing a good thing! (Totally justifies it all, right?!)

    1. Yes definitely! My parents and friends are always like, "oh my gosh! You buy so many books!" I always respond with, "Well, I could be addicted to things much worse... like crack cocaine." lol! :)
