Top Ten (Non-Scary) Halloween Movies

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

As always, Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely ladies at The Broke and the Bookish

I don't know about you, but I get really creeped out with scary movies, but I still enjoy getting into the holiday spirit by watching some good (non-scary) Halloween movies! So I'm going to give you my top ten favorite non-scary Halloween movies.

1. Hocus Pocus
This is a hilarious and wonderful family friendly movie that will have the whole house laughing. If you haven't seen this movie, shame on you!

2. Halloweentown
As a lover of all things Disney Channel growing up (until Disney Channel went down the tubes), movies like Halloweentown were my thing! One of my all time favorite Disney Channel movies.

3. The Addams Family
Dun-nuh-nuh-nuh *snap snap*
Looking back, The Addams Family is a really weird movie, but it is also so very good. It has that odd gothic quality and dark humor to it that makes you laugh.

4. Beetlejuice
Northing can get better than Michael Keaton in Beetlejuice. As a kid, I loved this movie. I thought it was hilarious. I actually haven't seen it in years, but I remember loving how crazy it was.

5. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
This is a must see for all families with little kids. Growing up, every season we would watch a Charlie Brown, especially when Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas hit.

6. Harry Potter
Obviously, I think the books are better and more likely to get you into the holiday spirit, but the movies can do that just the same!

7. The Nightmare Before Christmas
One of the best Tim Burton films, in my opinion (except for Sweeney Todd).

8. The Phantom of the Opera
I love everything about this opera. Seeing it on stage is astounding and beautiful and absolutely mesmerizing, but they did such an excellent job translating it into cinematic form too.

9. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
As a kid, I loved this Disney-fied adaptation. It was one of my favorites, and now I enjoy reading the actual story by Washington Irving now that I studied English in undergrad.

10. Young Frankenstein
This is without a doubt one of my most favorite parodies ever.

As a bonus, I'll give you these two:

The Raven
If you like Edgar Allan Poe, and don't mind a bit of blood and suspense, you will enjoy this movie.

Sweeney Todd
I don't know about you, but I absolutely LOVE musicals and this gritty, gory musical is one of my absolute FAVORITES!

What do you think? Would you add other movies onto this list?

  1. Wow this list is great, giving me nostalgia in the best way. Hocus Pocus is the greatest. Halloweentown! That movie was so cute, though I never saw any of the many sequels.

  2. I've seen Hocus Pocus (I think) but it was so long ago that I don't remember much about it.

Practical Magic is another good Halloween movie.
