Maybe Not by Colleen Hoover

All of you guys know how much of a CoHo fan I am. I have given five stars to every book of her I've read. I knew I needed to finally read the complementary novella, Maybe Not, before I started Confess, so I bought it and was ready to be blown away yet again... but sadly, that was not the case.

Though I actually liked Warren in Maybe Someday--I thought he was hilarious--but I felt like this novella could have been a little more integrated with Maybe Someday and it would have been even more amazing than it was. I feel like the sexiness of Warren and Bridgette's story would have been more evened out by Ridge and Sydney's love story. Warren and Bridgette's relationship is an odd one. It's based nearly entirely on sexual interest, but then there are some good moments and some really funny ones peppered through this novella that in my opinion kinda saves it. Even still, this book kinda fell flat for me. I felt like it was just more of a reason to write smut than anything else. I still love CoHo, it's just that this novella wasn't entirely my thing.

I gave this book 2 stars.

The Deal by Elle Kennedy

This was a spur of the moment buy on my Kindle, and I stayed up reading it until 6:30am. Yes, you read that correctly. I think I read it at the perfect time. I wasn't in a reading rut per se, but I was in a type of reading funk that I really wanted to get out of. I randomly decided to buy it and it was actually probably one of the best decisions.

It was a story of two head strong characters and the story of bad first impressions turned into love. Though it's a bit predictable and slightly cliché at times, it made up for it in character depth and development. I loved the slow simmer between Hannah and Garrett. I also really enjoyed the depth of their character, and what exactly made them who they were. I think this book was just the thing I needed in order to get back into the swing of things. I will say that I really enjoyed this book more than I would want to admit. I thought it was a nice little story and I am very interested in reading the next one once it is released later this spring!

I gave this book 5 stars

Beautiful Oblivion by Jamie McGuire

I have heard so many good things about Jamie's books, and I heard that Beautiful Oblivion was nothing but excellent. I mean it has over a 4 star rating average on Goodreads. That should mean great things right?

Well, I must have bought a completely different book  because I hated it. I found myself rolling my eyes at all the characters because of their ridiculous actions that in no way matched up with their ages. Everyone seemed so illogical and verging on stupid. They jumped to too many conclusions, and their choices made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Also can we just talk about how stock every single character was? There wasn't a single character that didn't step outside of their stereotypes or anything.

To say this book was disappointed would be an understatement; it was dramatically underwhelming. I'm glad I only paid $1.99 instead of full price.

I gave this book 1 star.

  1. Oh no, beautiful Oblivion was that bad?! I know that when I read Beautiful Disaster and loved it (naive little girl I was..) it was heavy in the sexual tension and possessiveness, but this one sounds pretty bad too. I think you have to like Jamie's writing and that sort of thing to like the books, and that sucks, I'm sorry it didn't appeal or do anything for you Amanda.. <3

    1. Yeah, I can do possessiveness in male characters... but it has to be done well in order for me to find it attractive. And I felt like he just jumped to too many conclusions. It was disappointing, but that's just my opinion. I know of a lot of people who really enjoyed this book.

  2. I loved Maybe Someday (it is kind of funny that my review for that went up today on my blog) but I think I will be skipping the Maybe Not novella. I don't read a lot of novellas anyway. So sometimes when I am in a reading funk usually a book like The Deal will get me out of it. I don't always read a lot of romance books but when I need to spice things up a little bit I always seem to turn to some romantic comedies. Honestly, I read Beautiful Disaster and wasn't really a fan so I don't plan on reading Beautiful Oblivion. Sad it didn't work out for you.

    1. Yeah, Maybe Someday was a FANTASTIC book!! Maybe Not was just a a smutty complementary novella that explains a few of Warren's actions. Have you read The Deal? You should! I think you would really like it! :)

  3. I've only ever heard of the third book, and that was because of the author's bad behaviour (seriously... is there something in the water these days?).

I haven't read any of Colleen Hoover's books yet, but they seems to be well-liked. Which one would be a good one to start with?

    1. Really? I hadn't heard about her bad behavior! What happened?

Oh you should definitely try a CoHo book! Try starting with Maybe Someday. I think that's a great book to start with. Oh it's soooo good!
