2016 Reading Challenges

Saturday, January 2, 2016

Last year, most of my challenges kinda went down the tubes due to some crazy life-events, so this year I'm going to go a little easy on myself. I have discovered that I shouldn't stress myself out when it comes to something that I want to do, so I have decided to stick with a few very enjoyable challenges this year.

Last year, I gave myself the challenge of 50 books, but I had actually ended up reading 62 books. Taking that into consideration, I found it necessary to up it by ten and make my annual reading goal and even 60 books.

This is probably the challenge I'm most excited about. Last year was my first year to really jump into audiobooks, so I gave myself a small goal of 10-15 books, thinking that I wouldn't be listening to more than that. Boy, was I wrong. I ended up with around 34 or something like that, and that's not to mention all the times I re-listened to SJM's books throughout the year.
So this year, I am shooting for the My Precious Badge, which is 30-50 audiobooks. I totally think I can do it. I have grown to love audiobooks, and I'm super excited about what I will listen to in 2016.

I have come to the realization that I have not read enough adult fiction in my life. I work at Barnes and Noble, and so I see the books that come out, but I've also realized that over the past twenty-six years have been drenched in YA literature only (minus the adult novels that I have to read for classes). I feel that in order to be a well-rounded reader of literature, I need to work more on adult novels as well.
So I am giving my self the challenge of reading 10-15 adult books (and by that I mean non-romance/smut based adult fiction novels) in the year of 2016.

My Personal Graphic Novel Challenge

I do not read graphic novels... It's a problem I have. And I feel like that is a really big gap in my reading. Since I work in Barnes & Noble, and I have a ton of co-workers who absolutely love graphic novels, I have decided to also make this a bit of a challenge for me! I have decided that during the course of the year I need to have read 10-15 graphic novels.

What reading challenges will you be participating in during the year of 2016?

  2. I'm doing the Goodreads again for the 4th year in a row. This is the first year that I will be doing the TBR Pile Challenge, and my 2nd Netgalley/Edelweiss Challenge.

  3. I'm doing the Goodreads challenge for the firs time actually. I have it set at 100 books for the year, but we'll see! I like your personal adult fiction challenge. I really do like adult books, but I find that sometimes I focus more on YA. I've been mixing it up more lately though. There are some great titles out there!

    1. Oh wow that's GREAT! Goodreads is an excellent challenge to do! There really are some great adult titles out there. I think I'm in the same boat as you because I've been really focused on YA because that's where my heart is, but for me personally, I think it's important to read outside of comfort zones, which is why I decided to do an adult fiction challenge. I'm hoping that I will read some really great ones this year! Good luck on your challenges!

  5. I set myself a 50 book goal this year. I'm finally graduating from uni, so I will have more time to read after April! I'm also doing a reading challenge I came up with for my blog. There is one challenge requirement per month and the theme is discovery, so each requirement is meant to encourage you to break out of your boundaries, reading and otherwise. If you're interested at all you can read that post: http://katsyxo.com/2016/01/01/katsyxo-2016-reading-challenge/ (:

Also: I WORK AT BARNES AND NOBLE TOO, YO!

Also, also: since you're looking for some "adult" books to read I would highly recommend All The Light We Cannot See. I know you probably see it everywhere at work; it was huge over the summer. But it is seriously super, super good! Absolutely beautiful.

    1. Oh yay! Congrats on graduating! That's a great accomplishment! Ah I've been thinking about doing that kind of challenge. Maybe that will fit best for me next year. I'm in graduate school, so I'm a busy reader already. But thanks for mentioning it!

Ah you're another B&N person! YES! How awesome! Yeah! I ended up buying All the Light We Cannot See when we got in signed copies on Black Friday! It's definitely going to be a book that I read for my Adult Fiction Challenge! :)
