Review: Through the Woods by Emily Carroll

Why I chose this book:
This book was actually given to me by a coworker for my birthday. I have really been trying my hand at reading more graphic novels, and he decided that not only was he going to give me a graphic novel, but he was going to give me one in the horror genre, because he knows how much I don’t like horror. Despite this, he was intent on picking out one that I would enjoy, and so he gave this book to me.

My Bookish Thoughts:
First let’s just start with the art in this book. IT IS GORGEOUS!
If you don’t read this book for any other reason, just let it be because of the art.

It was entrancingly beautiful and the coloring and bright colors made you appreciate the storyline even more. Actually, gorgeous doesn’t even really cover it. It was even more than that!

This is a book that contains five (or-so) short stories told in graphic novel format. These short stories are equally entrancing, beautiful, and terrifying. Some reminded me of tales I’ve heard before like Red Riding Hood, or forgotten French regency tales, but this book takes the bacon in creepy and beautiful.

I would read it again. It’s the perfect Halloween read, or one to read to a high school class to show them the structure of short stories or the horror genre. This is a must for any person who enjoys the horror genre or graphic novels.

Seriously, go buy it! You won’t regret it!

I gave this book 5 stars

  3. Glad you enjoyed it! I agree with you, the graphic is definitely gorgeous. It used lots of dark (and red mostly) colors, but somehow it works! I really think the last story is the creepiest *shudders*
